The Deities of the Aztecverse: A Living Pantheon

Since 2013, the Aztecverse has served as a gateway where ancient myth enters modern reality. These are not merely stories of the past; they are documentations of how the Mexica goddesses and gods cross into our dimension to influence, challenge, and transform the human experience.
Across my novels—from the cosmic horror of 13 Secret Cities to the underworld descent of Hall of Mirrors—these deities act as the architects of the narrative. —Cesar Torres
The Cardinal Powers: The Tezcatlipocas
The central tension of the Aztecverse is dictated by the cardinal directions and the mirrors of the Tezcatlipocas.
Tezcatlipoca: The Lord of the Smoking Mirror. A master of trickery and malice, his influence grants superhuman gifts with a heavy price.
- Featured in: How to Kill a Superhero (Books 1–4), 13 Secret Cities, Hall of Mirrors.
Xipe Totec: The Flayed Lord. The Red Tezcatlipoca. A deity of rage and violent renewal, representing the shedding of the old to make way for the new. His resentment is tearing the cosmos open.
- Featured in: 13 Secret Cities, 9 Lords of Night, Hall of Mirrors.
The Lords of the Underworld: Mictlán
The Aztecverse descends into the nine levels of the underworld, governed by the keepers of death.
Mictlantecuhtli & Mictecacíhuatl: The King and Queen of Mictlán. They oversee the transition of souls and the atmospheric dread of the deep earth. Death in Aztec cosmology was never a singular force. It took two.
- Featured in: 9 Lords of Night, 13 Secret Cities.
Xolotl: The dog-headed guide who leads the sun through the underworld and protects those in transition.
- Featured in: 13 Secret Cities.
The Progenitors & Creators
These deities represent the foundation of life, the earth, and the sacred act of artistic creation.
Coatlicue: The Mother of Gods. The earth that gives life and the earth that devours everything it produces. Her daughter carries her wound into Mictlán.
- Featured in: 13 Secret Cities, Our Lord of the Flowers.
Xochipilli & Xochiquetzal: The Prince and Princess of Flowers. They preside over the flowery dream (temicxoch) and the blooming of the soul.
- Featured in: Our Lord of the Flowers.
Tonantzin: The venerated aspect of the Mother, bridging the gap between ancient roots and modern devotion.
- Featured in: Our Lord of the Flowers.
Huitzilopochtli: The solar war god, the driving force of the Mexica sun.
- Featured in: Our Lord of the Flowers.
Quetzalcoatl: The Feathered Serpent. Before the mirrors were polished, before the night had a name, there was light in the shape of wind and wisdom.
- Featured in: 13 Secret Cities, Hall of Mirrors.
