Tezcatlipoca: Shadow, Memory, and the Smoking Mirror

In the Aztecverse, Tezcatlipoca (Nahuatl: The Smoking Mirror) is the ultimate force of upheaval and ancestral memory. He is the Lord of the Night Sky, the master of the North, and the unyielding observer of the human heart. He is also the lord of nagualismo, a core ability to shape shift; he often transforms into the jaguar, or in some myths, a turkey. Within my body of work, he is often manifested in his "Black" aspect—the shadow catalyst that forces evolution through hardship.

The Architect of the Mirror

Since the inception of the Aztecverse in 2013, Tezcatlipoca has functioned as the silent engine of conflict. He does not grant power out of benevolence; he grants it as a test. He is the god who sees into the obsidian reflection of the soul, revealing truths that most would rather keep hidden.

In the HTKS (How to Kill a Superhero) series, his influence is the source of "superhuman" gifts. These abilities are never heroic in the traditional sense; they are burdens that reflect the moral weight of those who wield them.

Manifestation: The Shadow and the Jaguar

Tezcatlipoca’s presence is defined by his missing foot—replaced by an obsidian mirror—and his connection to the Tepeyollotl (The Heart of the Mountain/The Jaguar).

  • The Obsidian Reflection: Just as the ancient mirrors were used for divination, Tezcatlipoca uses the narrative of 13 Secret Cities to reflect the fractures in modern society. He also plays a major role in Hall of Mirrors, as he and his mirrors reflect reality and illusions of reality back to the characters.
  • The Master of Trickery: He is the "Enemy of Both Sides," a deity who thrives in the chaos of change and the stripping away of illusions.

Connection to the Multiverse

Tezcatlipoca is the necessary darkness that provides the contrast for the entire Pantheon.

  • The Cardinal Rivalry: His eternal struggle with his brothers—including the flayed rage of Xipe Totec and the creative light of Xochipilli—forms the internal logic of the Aztecverse.
  • The Ancestral Link: He represents the "memory of the blood," the deep-seated heritage of Mexico that persists despite centuries of attempted erasure.
