As Buñuel is drawn deeper into the killer's cosmology, the boundary between investigation and initiation begins to collapse. Nestor begins to suspect that the Night Drinker's mention of the Aztec lords of the underworld has real substance. And the Lords may be watching.

Buñuel moves toward a destiny he cannot escape—a descent into a world where gods are real, where the dead do not rest, and where the price of cosmic meaning is paid in human suffering.
